Hello All,

I have a question on the capabilities of the BCM 50 V3. A sales person sold us this system based on the request that the system could forward voicemails to smtp mailboxes so they could be listened to from there.

So far the only way I see this working on the system is to install the unified messaging client and pull the voicemails into the end users mailbox from the phone system.

The desired functionality would be for the phone system to take the message and forward to an email address as an attachment with no unified messaging client involved.

Is this possible on the BCM 50? The tech installing this says no, and this is quite the deal breaker.

Thanks for your input.

but can it forward mail via smtp to an email address based on the box?

Example, box "x" recieves an email and BCM50 forwards it to an email address associated with box "x"?

Thanks

NO. The UM on a BCM does not support SMTP or POP3. It only supports IMAP. I have setup a couple of differnt IMAP pullers to recieve the email and forward it to a email address but never worked perfectly.

The only way I got it to work well was with the Nortel UM App.

Hope this helps

Lershac, that has happened to me many times over the years. The best sales person by far, is someone who has a background as a technician. The salesperson will generally say anything to get the contract signed so they can get their commission from the sale. The last company I worked for, the tech's took a stand and demanded that we be consulted during the sales process. This helped to keep us from looking like a bunch of idiots at the install. Maybe you could suggest something similar to this to your employer.

ALLN1-

I have successfully set up smtp forwarding on the BCM50 with UM.

It will forward via smtp to the internet at large. Search for message forwarding in the documentation. You have to set up the SMTP server specs, and individually in each mailbox set up the forwarding address and mail address. It forwards it to email as a wav attachment with the caller id info in the subject, and can be listened to on current blackberry handsets, as well as on a PC.

Funny thing is Nortel support said no it wasnt possible, but persistent perusal of the voluminous documentation yielded the proper settings and procedure.

You also have to set up a special COS and make sure the VM box holders are assigned that COS.

There is a tricky part when setting it up... If the smtp session fails (inevitably the first couple do as you tweak the settings) the forwarding checkbox in the user profile is automatically unchecked so in between each attempt you have to go check it back to on, then try again. Once it works it stays checked.

This is ideal for my client, as they have users that are out of office alot, and being able to rec email with voicemail attachments immediately makes them much more responsive to customers.

I gotta get me one of these, between the VOIP and the messaging of VM, this thing rocks and provides great value.

This makes email integration possible without installing that hideous outlook add-on, and makes it truly platform independent. Mac Users rejoice!
