Hi there,
I upgraded a customers CICS 6.1 system with 1 Caller ID card. The customer wanted 4 more outside lines so I upgraded him to 7.1 software and a new CLID card.
When I installed the new 7.1 software module (yes, the power was off!) and fired up the system it never booted up, just kept blinking. I installed the software and cards on an older CICS cabinet I had for a spare and it worked fine.
I was told it should be a no problem upgrade and the tech I talked with suggested I discharge the Capacitor on the main board. The system sat unplugged for about a month and then I opened the case and discharged the capacitor.
I plugged in the 7.1 card again and fired up the system and this time it came up but none of the lines worked and line 1 had a strange load tone on it(no, it wasn't a fax or modem tone or sidetone or feedback). I put the cards and software in the spare again and everything worked fine.
Any suggestions? Even though all the numbers match it seems like the new software is not happy with that board. Is this a compatibility issue?
Thanks

Thank you for demonstrating to our many readers how NOT to default the KSU. As you have shown rapidly discharging the capacitor can damage the KSU.

Marv,
The problem was not defaulting the system. the problem was the system wouldn't fully boot up with version 7.1.
I was told by a Nortel repair technician to discharge the Cap because there are some times when the system doesn't fully clear it's memory after a software upgrade. I have seen this same problem once or twice before in the past with the older 616 systems.
The customers original system still works fine with 6.1, just doesn't work properly with version 7.1. The second system works fine with 7.1 software.
Thanks

Maybe it's just acting like a teenager....slap it silly and tell it to smarten up. Did you wait long enough for it to bootup fully?

It can take up to 30 minutes to fully install a 7.x. Upgrades sometimes do fail. There is a right way and a wrong way to default a KSU.
Your "Nortel Repair Technician" gave you wrong way, discharging the cap can damage the KSU.
