A couple of years ago, I acquired a Millennium Payphone for the Telephone Museum of PEI. The problem with displaying a Millennium, is unless you have access to a phone company's Millennium Manager, you can't get the phone to do much.

It has come to my attention recently, that Nortel/Quortec has a demo eprom which can be used in these phones which will allow setup as usual of these phones, but then simply page through the Millennium manager setup, and allow these phones to be used for demonstration purposes, which is exactly what I need.

How I would love to have my Millennium display semi-operational, and to at least have the display scroll "The Telephone Museum of Prince Edward Island" on the advertising line of the display.

Better yet, if would be great to be able to set it up through my Strowger telephone switch and Norstar 616 KSU so that it could call other phones in the museum.

Is anyone familiar with the Millennium Demo eprom, or anyone have any other suggestion how to accomplish this goal legally, of course.

Currently, it just sits there, with "Out of Service" on its display:

Also wanted for this phone and display is a A0651469 or AO637022 Inferred Answer Supervision module

Any suggestions would certainly be appreciated.

Dave

Have you tried calling Nortel and just ask them how to obtain that demo eprom?

I am pretty sure Nortel does not support that product and they sold the division to:
https://www.quortech.com/
Get in touch with them for software.

Nortel and Quortech both deny the existance of the chip - BUT I have seen it in existance and operation. It has the Nortel label right on it. Perhaps they don't have it anymore, but....

They wouldn't even sell a manual when asked. I finally found a pdf copy on a hacker's site.

If only I had a friendly Millennium Manager operator who would be willing to do a one time setup on it, setting it for 25 cent calling and local calls only. But to do that, as it isn't on a coin line, I would need the IAS (Inferred Answer Supervision) module.

With the investment I have in Nortel equipment aside from this phone, I was very disappointed.

I suppose their concern is protecting the security of Millennium systems - they are the most secure payphone available, but c'mon, guys! This is for a legitimate museum which has a ton of Northern Electric, Northern Telecom, and Nortel equipment!

Hi Dave,

I'm not sure if you have access to any specific equipment, but do you have an asterisk server setup? If so, you can use it along with a PAP2 ATA (which will incidentally reverse polarity on answer) to firstly capture the number that the payphone is attempting to dial out on.

Once you have that, you can program your asterisk box to route that number to a computer with a 1200baud modem nearby via a FXS card to it.

Then once you connect you can try and maybe reverse-engineer the commands you receive on the terminal screen.

I know it sounds tedious but I know your frustration as I myself have been dealing with telephones for a long time, from working on switches, to antique restoration, etc.

Although I don't work in the industry any longer, my interest (and maybe passion) still lies with these gadgets!

Let me know how you go with this and we'll go from there.

Cheers,
Armen
