Trying to help a freind on this one, without being on site. Plus, I have limited experience with the Nortel systems.
Nortel Meridian System with Start Talk voice mail. System also has a Meridian remote access box - so that outside users can call into a voice mail "back door" to check their messages.
The system used to be accessed by dialing a dedicated outside phone number that was fed to the remote access box through a telco provided ring decipher unit. (Same pair used for four different incoming phone numbers)
The church where this is in place has dropped the the signi-ring service, and now I just want to have this thing pick up the outside call directly.
My buddy hooked it up, and claims it wont work. I think he may have something wired wrong, but I want to make sure I know how this gadget is supposed to work.
The outside line goes to the Meridian remote access, which in turn is connected to a station port on the PBX. I assume that the phone system is programmed to answer this incoming call, then let people enter a mailbox number.
If anyone else has used the remote access setup, please let me know how it supposed to work. I think I can talk this guy through the correct hookup, as long as I know with confidence that I understand how the line gets into the system.
Thanks!!!!!

Are you talking about a "RAD"?
You don't need it. Just call in as long as the AA will pick up, then dial **, MB, P/W & you're good to go.

I wonder why they have it coming in on a station port then? Maybe they don't have AA answer on this system?
What does the RAD do?

RAD is Remote Access Device for programming the Norstar...has nothing to do with voice mail.

As RBF stated the RAD would be for remote programng. One the phone numbers would probably be programmmed to ring a line that port that is dedicated to the RAD.
In order to program the Star talk remotely you will need the remote software on a PC which would dial into the system. you'll need the RAD password.

Hey - thanks guys! So, the RAD was not being used to access the voice mail system for user access. Just for remote programming!
Then, I guess I need to figure out how they were getting into the voice mail system from outside the building.

Obviously at one of them went to the RAD, then to a line port and at least one of them went straight to another line port, which WAS answered by the AA.

I think that makes perfect sense! I'm pretty sure I can talk him through reconnecting this now.
Thank you so much for the wise and timely counsel!
