Is there any reason putting the DSL phone line filter between the hi-speed modem and the wall jack wouldn't be work as well as putting individual phone inline filters on the sets around the house?

Just a thought.

Unless you put the filter at the entrance point of the phone line (before any other device) it will only filter the jack you plug it into, not the other jacks in the house.

By putting filters on all the other jacks where there are phones you isolate, or filter, the DSl noise from the voice on that line.

The signal you are filtering out is what is coming into the house, not what is going out of the DSL modem. You do not want to filter the DSL signal before it gets to the modem. You only want to filter out what is going back and forth to your phones.

I think you are a little confused about what DSL filters do. They get rid of the DSL signal for other things on the phone line like phones, faxes, etc. This is why DSL can share the same line- you can use your phone and DSL at the same time.

A DSL filter is to keep the DSL signal out of the phones which would cause interference in your phones. It also keeps the phones and ringers from "loading down" the line at the DSL carrier frequency and attenuating the signal. That is why you need to connect your phones through a filter.

The DSL modem itself needs to be connected directly to the phone line to receive the DSL signal. Since DSL filters remove the DSL signal, putting one between the modem and jack will prevent the modem from working.

WOW! Sure glad I asked this. Dumbo here was thinking the only DSL noise getting into the phones was coming from my own pc. Big light bulb comes on after reading all the above comments. And, of course it would keep my pc from working if I stuck a filter between the wall and hi speed modem.

Many thanks for getting my head straightened on this without whacking me with a 2x4.

The DSL "noise" comes from both the phone company and the modem as they communicate back and forth. The filters just keep it out of the phones and also allow that "noise" to be unaffected by the phones on that same line.

Not true.....if you ahve a DSL filter between the modem and wall jack it will still work IF.... AND ONLY IF.....you use the DSL filter with the phone and DSL out ports. You usual get at least one of these with your modem.

The ones with only one port are for locations with only a phone. I always install a DSL filter between the modem and jack, using the filter with a "phone" and "DSL" labeled ports.

Though it will work without the filter, there is usual a phone near the modem, therfore needing the two port filter.
