I have a customer that has a Nortel switch and the phone vendor said he wanted to put in a SMDR6. I use Ulitmate Call accounting software in the past and need to know if I actually need the SMDR6 to make this work or is there just programming in the phone system for the SMDR? I have read that you can use third-party accounting software but how does this work? Thanks

The SMDR sends the data from the Nortel to the PC that hosts the call accounting software. You need the SMDR as an interface.

SMDR6 is for spitting out raw data to printer. Third party is PC based reporting. Try these guys if looking for options. https://www.callaccountingsoftware.com/

I have looked and there are 2 different types of SMDR 6. Which one would I need to make work with third party software?

What 3rd party software are we talking about?
New software can use CTA or CTI device.
Like Marv said...what system? verison?
You should be looking at your software and it's requirments then worry about the Norstar device thats required.
