I have a customer that takes recordings over a phone line from doctors then transcribe them. These calls are recorded in a computer. The problem he is having is the volume is not always loud enough. Does somebody make a line amplifier that I can put on the line. He has 5 lines going into the computer. There is not any adjustments in the software he is using. Thanks for your help.

The proper approach here would be at the software level. Probably even before that I would investigate the headset and what volume control options are available with different models.

If I understand you correctly the volume is not loud enough during playback? Where does the headset come into play? Is the recording a wav file?

probably easier to look toward boosting the output from the PC rather than the input from the co line
(I think thats what Hals suggesting , and its what I would be looking at first )

How are the phones lines connected to the computer modem and voice cards have some adjustment in them if you know what the card is I would suggest checking its manual for the proper setting

I'm thinking the problem is distant end loudness, caused by tired/bored/distracted doctors. Handset under the chin instead of in front of mouth, etc. Years ago, I worked on a Code-A-Phone dictation complex in a hospital, and that was a common problem. The transcriptionists were used to it and just turned up the volume. Sometimes they'd all get together and start asking the same doctor for redictates. That usually got the message across. Of course, that's probably not an option here, so the amplification from the computer file comes into play. We have been having a little problem recording near end in Panasonic TDA sytem using PRI circuit! We tried home built amps and other stuff, finally bought a multi-channel musical instrument mixer, ran TX audio in one channel and RX audio in another channel and WA-LA, we had a cure. Anyhow, point is, instrument amp between computer and headphones may give you the gain adjustment you need. Don't remember the brand we used, sorry. John C.
