Hello,

I really need some advice here. And I'm just going to shoot it out on this forum because you are all technical knowlegable and bussiness world knowlegable... And none of my friends would have any idea what I am talking about.

Well, My problem is this. I have been doing telecom mangment in the IT dept at this company for 1.5 years now and really have enjoyed it. Working with vendors and keeping accounts straight and getting all the bills paid.. But recently my old boss (we'll call him Joe) stepped down and got replaced with a new boss (we'll call him Frank). Well my new boss, I got the impression, thought my job was 'dumb clerical' work (not in a mean way ever, mind you, he's really actually quite nice) and not fit fot IT. So he 'promoted' me and said they need someone to take over Networking more in the IT dept and wanted to reassign me as network admin. Well That IS good news and I do really appreciate the oppertunity. And I DO want to learn and I am a fairly quick learner. But, I don't have alot of experience in Networking. Now I do have technical experience, i did tech support for 5 years and deffinatly know my way around a computer. But I have NEVER managed my own network (except my home one) and well this is NOT a small company.

Well I am starting to stress out. I am being asked to do things I am not very comfertable doing. There are alot of ??? still for me and I really don't feel I have enough knowlege or experience to tackle the problems they want me to solve, without help. And getting help from the other IT staff is inconvinient because they are all very busy. He has pretty much throwen me in some pretty big issues already and I wish he would start out smaller.

He HAs assigned me to work WITH my old boss joe on some of these issues which has been helpful. But at the same time I cant help but feel like.... I am invading his EGO space. DO you know what I mean? Things that he would of taken care of himself the NEW boss is having him help me with....

And I can't help but feel like This is trampling his ego a bit... I could probably solve some issues with his help but I am hesitant to approach him too much with questions or help. He'll probably just think "why don't I just do this?". I don't to be on his bad list.(and I have been advised by other Co Workers to NOT goto him for help because the 'going over his head' thing would give him the wrong perception.) *roll eyes*

I don't wnat to fail either... I really want to succeed. But it's really starting to stress me out because I really don't feel I have to tools to succeed. I don't want to tell my boss that I don't feel comfertable with this.. I mean if I tell him, Then what? He'll probably fire me (for being worthless) or not give the raise he's been promising which I need..

What should I do? I am pretty new to all of this.. maybe I'm just stupid or something.. UBt I am feeling quite overwhelmed and way out of my safty zone.

Any advice would help.

abigail, Welcome to a place with no egos to deal with. Shall we begin with some basic information. How many users on your computer network? How many extensions on your telephone system? What kind of telephone system?

Most important question-Do we have a technical problem we can begin with?

Just in case no one answers this, I'm at least going to put down a response.

Ahhh, the Peter Principle has struck again. You are promoted to a level you feel uncomfortable with and now the stress is going to break you :-)

This could be a test. Your job may have been too easy. IF you demonstrate your work by punching out after an 8 hour day, you will probably not win many brownie points. You should probably figure out a way to train yourself after your normal day, or perhaps show your willingness to stay late to solve a problem.

By the same token, your new boss should not expect you to have learned this stuff by osmosis. Your old boss stepped down for a reason, maybe related to this, but you never got promoted to the new job then, so, I can't understand how you're supposed to just "know it".

Perhaps you can go to your old boss, now your peer, and grovel a little :-). Tell him that you never had a chance to learn this new job on the old one, but you'd sure appreciate any help he can give you.

And keep your chin up. We all had to start someplace and we're still learning. There's a Latin phrase here somewhere "Sie Carborundum illegitimus".

Well.. its a big network.. spread out over half of the USA. Very complicated.

BUt like I guess one of the problems they want to me solve (which really should be easy) is to get a bandwidth monitoring set up on on of our Point to point T1 data circuts from LA to Portland.

But in order to put a bandwidth monitor on the circuit I

a) either need to fly down to LA and hook a hub up to the router between the switch and the router and then attach a laptop with a packet sniffer onto the hub.

b) Less risky and less travel -- monitor it remotely with the SNMP protocol (but that would require telneting into the router and setting up SNMP on the Cisco 2800 router (I have NO idea how to do this)

Im scared of flying down there and hooking a hub up to this router. I mean this is our CORP office and honestly I have never seen a Cisco 2800 before.. frown I mean What if I unhook the wrong cable? I mean I don't even know where this stuff is located in the building!

Essentially this is a simple problem.. but the logistics are fuzzy...

I don't just want to start unhooking things from our Cisco router. What if i break something??? God I'm a dumby...
