Good evening Amigos/Amiga's - Last week, I had my external modem hanging off my KXT336 switch die on me. I have since purchased a new Zoom Ext. Serial faxmodem (mod # 3048) and attached it to my switch this morning. Sure enough, all I am currently getting is the letter 'A' echoing back to me through Hyperterm when I dial in (using 8,N,1). I have tried using the setting's (printed in VOl.2 of the KXT manual; 1200, 7,N,1 and 7, Mark, 1) to no avail :-( Thinking It might have been the serial 25 to 9pin cable, I attached a Lavalink Ether-serial adapter ( https://www.lavalink.com/index.php?id=56) to my switch and network; Interestingly enough, I can get the initial Banner Page of the switch to come up in Hyper Terminal, but *cannot* get past that screen (hitting enter only returns beeps :-( So, perhaps I am asking (2) questions here: 1. Does anyone have experience getting a Ether-serial adapter on the KXT336 to work successfully? 2. Would anyone happen to know what mistakes I may be making with my Hyper Terminal configuration settings, as I have tried different combinations of Baud rates with different parity settings (with Flow control On and Off) Any insight would be tremendously helpful. Thank you in advance - Dave

Have you tried connecting directly to the modem with your laptop and hard configured the modem settings to what worked before your remote modem failed. So that it will not try to auto connect at a higher baud rate ? That should cure your echo only A trouble .

In case I lost/confused you ,the modem you want to hard configure is the new one you purchased . Sometimes I assume too much .

most likely the old cable was what you need and you need to to have the init string identical in the new modem identical to to what was in there before ?

The cable for a 336 to connect to an external modem should be a 25 pin wired straight-through. The modem's defauls settings should be OK, but just to be safe, type the following into the modem using a laptop:
ATE1Q0 (enter) AT&W (enter)
As for your terminal settings in Hyperterminal, it should be set for VT100 or if available, VT220. You should try to set the serial port settings on the 336 to be 9,600 baud, No parity, 8 data bits and 1 stop bit.

Thanks for all the reply's team. Turns out, we had a funky terminal config on the 336. I have since reset it to good ol 9600, N,8,1 though our LavaLink Ether-Serial adapter and it's working like a charm

Glad to hear it Dave. That system, despite it's shortcomings, is solid as a rock. We just decomissioned two of them (our own installs from 1993) recently. We almost felt like we lost a family member. While it's a bit of a joke, when the most recent one was shut down for the last time, our technician who maintained it for 10 years actually asked his helpers for a moment of silence.
Sure, we all laughed about it, but I think he was serious. That thing never failed and was just about as predictable as a system can be. Despite it's value, we have decided to showcase it in our conference room as a coversation (and hopefully a collector's) piece.
