does anybody know if just upgrading the chip on a kx-ta624 will allow for the t7400 series of phones to work.

To answer your question, no. The 74XX series of phones is only supported by their digital systems. The 624 is not and won't be able to be upgraded to this capacity.
The only sets supported by this system are the 70XX or 77XX series, though some of the much older sets, like 616XX and 1232XX are also supported. I also think that the short-lived 73XX series phones can be supported, but I can't say for sure.
Sorry for the bad news, but they are completely different architectures; analog vs. digital. I wish I had better news.
