Tried all the above, and still can't comm with vm. Connect my pc using same cable, and I am getting garbage characters. Did not see boot sequence or any indication of communication. Any other way to reset the VM without resetting it to factory defaults? This is the next step if I can't.

gibberish on the screen means either your cable is junk or the baud rate on the tvs is changed or both
got the books there is a way to put comm port back to default

Will check. This is so weird, because the customer was in the middle of making changes to one their voicemail boxes when it just stopped working

I'll bet they used auto connect when the were in programing with hyperterminal and the settings on the tvs is 19'200 N 8 1 because some one used the voicemail master software originally
and If you had a 9 to 9 and a null modem adapter you'd get right in

I have a null modem wired as 2-3, 3-2, 4-6, 6-4, and 5-5. Won't this work? What if I set hyperterminal to 19,200 N 8 1...will I get in then?

since you don't have a tda or tvs in your office if you put a 9 to 25 gender changer on your homemade cable and you connect to the td at 9600,m,8,1 and it starts spitting smdr then your cable is going to work on the tvs then I would say try 19'200 n 8 1
if i left a customer hanging for 11 days i'dd have lost them....

yes if you have a known working td programing cable and you adapt it down to a 9 pinner it will work on the tvs 50 before the 50 came you used the same cable to program both units....
so I will recap for you if you have a 9 to 9 cable with the proper gender on it, a 9 pin null modem adapter and a 25 to 9 adapter with the proper gender on and a toughbook with a hot com port thats all you used to need and a ton of paper manuals ....

little tip if you had a precidia ipocket 232 set in transparency server mode connect to the com port on the tvs any one in the place who had password or outside if you have a proper network set up could telnet into the tvs for remote programing. I bought one to play with would have been awesome back in the day for high end customers . I have my ipocket connected to my smdr /programing port of my TDA 50G and I can telnet wirelessly to see all system call and alarm activity ..... https://www.precidia.com/products/ipocket_232.html
