Just curious if a company can do this with some sort of gizmo they can buy, or if it's a service you pay your provider for - whenever my mortgage company calls it comes up as (000)-000-0000 on caller ID. I'm guessing they do this so you don't call back the call center, but instead call the customer service #; obviously they aren't trying to be devious as it's pretty easy to tell who is calling when I see that number.

Thx
Matt

they can if they use a voip service or a PRI for dial tone...however it is about to become illegal in the US, and is already illegal in FL when used by telemarketers.

If you were to do a Google search for the phrase "spoof caller id" you would get about 400,000 hits. The answer is in there somewhere.

Yeah, that occured to me after Pete posted the wiki link. I use google about 100 times a day; I don't know why it didn't occur to me this time. Apologies.....

This is used to (and may still be) a issue with some shady call centers.

I remember I kept getting calls from strange area codes that turned out to be test numbers for COs in Canada.

One time I answered and it was someone selling DirecTv. When I was about to ask them to put me on their do not call list, they hung up.

Oh yea. With Avaya communication manager and a PRI, I can send anything I want out. I like to call my friends and send them their own number. smile

Same here..I usually put in my buddy's house number and tell him he's out of beer and to be sure and bring some on his way home.
