My computer has always been plugged into the wall using bellsouth's dsl (or AT&T's now I guess).
I just got a fax machine so I put a splitter in the wall so that I could use one or the other but the computer don't seem to ever be able to get on the internet when I use a splitter. I went a bought a new splitter just to make sure. Is there some way to make this work or does dsl not share or what?

Welcome to the board.

I assume this works without the splitter. You need to filter the line cord going to the fax machine. Also make sure you have a Y adapter and not a 2 line splitter.

make sure you split out of the DSL modem if possible, and like Bill said, sounds like you have a 2 line splitter and not a Y splitter.

Just get a DSL filter and use it to connect your fax to the splitter.

One more thing. Many DSL modems have a filtered port on the back for a phone. If that's the case get rid of the splitter and plug your fax into the phone port of the modem.

Thanks all. Anybody got a link to what a Y splitter may really look like. When I put that into Ebay I got a lot of splitters that look like what I have. I have one that plugs into the wall with the male side and then the other side is just 2 female slots for 2 lines. Sounds like a two line splitter instead of a Y splitter, but now after looking at Ebay I'm confused. I do have the filters that I got from the company when I bought the service so I can use that.

A two line splitter will have line 1 and line 2 stamped someplace on it or maybe just a 1 and 2. A single line splitter won't have anything stamped on it. Did you check your DSL modem for a phone port?

Yes, my modem has a phone hook-up. I removed the line and put the splitter and filter on that...then connected the computer and fax/printer. Still no internet.

Is the link above a splitter, or a filter? I still can't find a picture of one or a link to where to buy one.

Plug the modem into the jack, without the splitter, just like it was prior to getting your fax. Plug the fax into the phone jack on the back of the modem, no other filter or splitter is needed.

You could use a splitter for dsl and phone as you've linked to, but if you do it as above you won't need it.
