I currently have a DK16 and, as you know, not many people support this machine. Lately, my hard drive has been starting to freeze up, so I have some big desisions to make.

My boss wanted me to replace the hard drive, but of course, Toshiba doesnt make this part any more, and they guy we had looking at it said its a $1600 part - why, I have no clue.

So now I'm wondering a few things:

1. Is this part really that much?!
2. If so, would I be better off getting a new system?
3. If I DID get a new system, what would allow me to keep my current phones? I would like something thats new enough that it will actually be supported, yet we dont want something that is top of the line, as we are a very small company.

ANy/all advice is greatly appreciated

What your saying doesn't make sense. A DK16 is the KSU, it has no hard drive. Are you talking about your voicemail, and if so what type is it? Stratagy DK,Flash, or a PC type 4,6.

First, there have got to be 1,000 Toshiba dealers in this country, any one of which can support your system.
Second, you certainly do not need to get a new phone system in order to replace your voice mail unit. I am guessing that you have a Stratagy DK voice mail card. All you need is a new voice mail unit.

(one of these days I will actually read what I have typed for major typos before I hit submit)

Well, sure there are people who support my system, but Toshiba no longer makes parts for it, and what you CAN find is outragously priced - I'm sure you're aware of this. I dont want to spend upwards of $1500 to replace the HDD in my voicemail unit (which, yes, is a Stratagy DK unit).

I realize I dont need a whole new system just to replace my voicemail. But, if I'm going to spend an arm and a leg to JUST replace the voicemail, I might be better off getting a whole new system - one that isnt obsolete (which is exactly how Toshiba described my machine).

What I'm asking for is advice - what is best? Just replace the VM card? Or get a whole new system, one that will cost less in upkeep for the future?

Thanks

Ok, if the system fullfills your needs, then the system is not obsolete, not matter what someone (a dealer I assume) is telling you. They want to sell you a new system. There are plenty of refurbished parts available for the DK16 on E-Bay and on the secondary markets. True, the DK16 does not have a lot of the capabilities and features of the newer systems, but I think it would be much smarter, if it was my money, to spend $1,500 on a new voicemail than it would be to spend $6,000-$10,000 on a new system.

You can get the hard drive replaced in the DK unit for a minimal amount (compared to a new voice mail) if sent in to a Toshiba dealer to get repaired. You can also find on ebay repair kits for the DK which include the hard drive.
