We have a Viking C-1000A that controlls a door strike.
Until recently, we could hit ** (star star) from our receptionist phone and it would unlock the door.
This is no longer working.
Is there a way I can confirm that ** can still be dialed. Our phone vendor enabled this at one point.
This would help eliminate some finger point between the door security vendor and phone system vendor.

There is a fixed speed dial on 3000 series phones so dialing a star would not be an issue.
If you were using 2000 series phones and there was no speed dial programmed on one of the 10 or 20 buttons, you would not be able to dial the ** directly.
You could program a speed dial button on that phone (code = 497) and ** would work.
The old Toshibas needed a [speed dial] button as one of the 10 or 20 to use * and they needed a [redial] button on one of the 10 or 20 in order to use the #. If the [speed dial] and [redial] buttons couldn't be put on because they needed the buttons for something else more important, they had to dial * # and then dial whatever * or # they needed.
When the Toshiba saw * # in sequence it knew you were not using * for speed dial or # for redial and freed up the * andd # buttons to be used freely. If you had no [redial] button on your phone and wanted to dial in a pager number and press # to send it, you dialed the pager number, then * # and a final # to send. The * and first # were not transmitted over the line.
If you want to see if that is the problem, have the receptionist dial * # * * and see if the door releases.

Hook up a 2500 set in place of the Viking and call the receptionist and have him/her dial **. If you hear it, then it's not the CTX.

If all else fails, Viking will provide custom software that allows you to pick a different series of DTMF codes. We did that for an apartment complex so that residents only had to dial "44" to unlock the front door. I don't think that Viking charges much money for the software.
