I'm working on an insurance claim for a client who's voicemail was destroyed by a lightning strike. They have a DK424 and the voicemail was an IVP8-4 card. I've seen the card available for about ****. The vendor is charging approximately ******for part and labor. Does this make sense?

You are close on the card price, although I think *****would be a more realistic number.

The labor cost is going to depend on how elaborate the voice mail system setup was, as it will need to be programmed.

Depending on where the acutal work is dispatched from (travel costs, etc.), and the programming time, the quoted price could be considered fair, in my opinion.

Thank you. Does it take long to program a voicemail card?

Okay Steve and Phil, why don't you tell everyone exactly how long it takes? Assuming you know what you are doing of course.

I thought my reply was fair. The guy is sincerely looking for some information to see if he's getting ripped off. I don't think we have enough information to judge.

How many users? Are they using the auto attendant? Does the vendor have to help the end users set up their mail box again? How much travel is involved?

First off your working an Insurance claim, I hope that they are using "New" equipment and ....IF Wesleyg has the programming information for the voicemail AND depending on the previously mentioned vairables that Toolie spoke of I've seen programming & setup take 8-12 hours. That is if you expect the programmed to walk in the door directly to your phone system and program it from the written information that you hand him/her.
Just remember one thing please....the guy/gal coming through your front door to do the work isn't the person...in most cases, that is charging you, but they are the person that is costing you an hourly charge. Have the information ready for them and let them do their job. Most of the time the tech's are on your side.
If your working a voicemail that is a 2 or 4 port and the customer is NOT using auto attendant, and there are less than 30 mailboxes then the time frame might be closer to 3-6 hours.
I hope this helps.

Well if the Strata DK is still working fine, after you replace the IVP8 with a new one, it should start taking messsages right away. The hard part is trying to recreate what they had before.

A. Does someone there know how to have everyone set up their mailboxes? The tech would not have to do that.

B. Does someone there know how to program the day greeting and the night greeting? The tech would not have to do that.

C. Do you have single digit menuing? That is not a difficult job if required.

What you haven't told us, is there more than one company involved in the voicemail, etc. all the little things that no one thinks about until the tech is gone.

There is no phone system programming to set up.

One company even with single digit menuing should not be over two hours, probably one. If you want to get all complicated as hell, then the sky is the limit. You create one personal mailbox and copy it to the range, you insert names, hell that is a nothing job.

I've seen Paige spend four hours on a multiple company deal but never longer.

Sometimes the time varies with the chair. Big cushy executive chair makes you very comfortable and you think of everything you could put in, miserable little folding chair that wiggles, get the minimum done and get the hell out.

Sorry, Toolie, for my flippant response. It should not take more that 3-4 hours, tops, assuming that the tech is well versed in that particular voice mail.
