Ringmaster is a line feature provided by local company whom is provideing dial tone.
It is normally used with a device at customer site. Allowing different rings for different devices.

I think it's called distinctive ring in most places. Never heard of "ringmaster".
Maybe it was a line to a circus ringmaster's dressing room. :toothy:

GTE marketed this service under that name. Bell Atlantic referred to it as "Ident-a-Ring". Once Verizon took over, "Ringmaster" went away.

One could imagine why Verizon didn't like "ringmaster".

Ringmaster was also a intercom device that phone companys leased about 30 years ago. It was in the vacuum tube era.

Ericson offered a line of phones called Ringmaster. As I recall, they were those tower looking phones with the dial on the base. You had to pick it up and turn it over to dial.
They were very "space age" looking in the '60s (were they in "2001"?). A very popular, well built phone.
No making fun of vacuum tubes, please.

Right on, Sam. Vacuum tubes were pretty much passe' by '78, Bob. I was there! If it was vacuum tube it was probably left over from the '60's. The HIGH power problems had even been pretty well conquered by 'solid state'. John C. (Not Garand)
