The manual doesn't seem to address this, but I'm thinking that we should be able to split a CO line before it goes into the DK16, install a fax machine on one branch of that line, and let the fax machine use its built-in auto-answering supporting distinctive ringing (aka multi-ringing) to immediately answer calls to the distinctive ring number.
Can anyone confirm that there should be no problems due to having a fax upstream of the DK16, or due to mult-ringing/distinctive ringing?
(I'm aware that the manual uses "distinctive ringing" with a different definition i.e. distinct ring cadences to standard devices for intercom and outside calls. That's not my interest here.)

Never done it, so no confirmation, but I don't see a reason it wouldn't work.
I'm sure someone here will know for sure.

I think you will need a line sharing device(that supports distinctive ringing). But not really sure about distinctive ringing

One thing I know is that the fax incorporates the call discrimination and distinctive ring support that might otherwise require a line sharing device.

Thanks for everyone's input. The results: I decided to try first to rely simply on the fax machine's built-in call discrimination and distinctive ring support, which worked fine pre-phone system. Thus far it has performed just as I hoped in its position in front of the phone system. Fax and phone system are getting along fine together.
