Hi,

We have a stratadk 280 system that we pulled, went VOIP. Now what to do with the old phone system? The owner knows of a company overseas that could use the system, but the question is, "Will it work overseas"? My thought is yes, but dont know much about the system. Any insight is much appreciated.

The most important thing that you will need to consider is the AC power. Not only are most overseas destinations using 230-240 volts for their voltage, but the frequency also matters. US systems are 60 Hz, where other countries use 50 Hz. Since many systems get their processor timing from the AC power, this might be a problem. You may be able to obtain converters that will deliver 60 Hz, 120 volt output though but I think that they are pretty expensive.

Another thing to consider is dialing plans. These have a great effect upon system features like LCR or toll restriction since most other countries use dialing plans that aren't anything remotely similar to those in North America.

Lastly, there is the listing of the product itself. Yours is FCC registered for use in the United States and possibly listed for use in Canada, but I seriously doubt that it is listed for legal connection in other countries. That stuff is rarely checked here, but the telcos in other parts of the world might not be so flexible, especially those that are government-run.

For all of the reasons Ed said... as well as not being cost effective. By the time you do conversions, shipping and tweaks it would be more logical to purchase new. The system its self is a very solid and reliable system, but old too. I would suggest selling it or keeping it as a spare when the VoIP goes bad.

wink

You may be able to contact your local Toshiba dealer and have them do a buy back also.

Good luck and keep us up to date!

btw - what is the configuration (cards, phones, etc.)?

Thanks

Not only that, something is bugging me as well. I ma thinking about the A-law and u-Law which, although the DK280 does not have, it could be in the software or Eprom.

And whereabouts Overseas? Maybe I can be of assistance.

Thank you for the replies. I am thinking it just may be easier to donate the system to a non profit locally.
