Yup. Its usually listed as a "QAM tuner". Many of you may have installed an OTA in order to receive free HD on local channels; like abc, nbc, and cbs. However, most cable companies already provided this, they usually show up in the upper bands like 112.7, 83.2.

I wonder if a current UHF signal amplifier will still boost the digital signal. I have not found any specs. as of yet. Does anyone know?

UHF signal amplifiers SHOULD still work. Most of them on the market are simple bandpass amplifiers (meaning they don't care what frequency or modulation is being used as long as the signal is within the frequency range it was designed for)

I'm sure somebody will try to sell you a "digital" amplifier just like they are pushing HD and digital splitters. Don't fall for it, nothing has changed as far as off-the-air goes.

I am in Houston, Texas & just recieved notice that the apartment property's cable service provider ( TV MAX ) is "upgrading" the property to there "XDTV". I have'nt contacted TVMAX yet, regarding the need for their "digital converter" boxes yet. I have 4 TV's in this place & I use them for my ISP (which is really Ygnition, BTW! )
I was planning to post this issue here, but, you guy's were right on top of it, as usual!
I will post back with all the "gory" details TVMAX gives me later.
I think I don't like where this is going.........

Anybody know how this is going to affect the "Guide Plus" or "TV Guide" feature of newer TV's? I've purchased several sets with this feature and paid quite a bit more to have it. It is an invisible signal that I seem to recall is carried by the VBI of the hosting network channel. According to Wickipedia, it's not looking good.

Ed, I don't think that anything in the vertical interval of NTSC standard definition video is affected. So if it's there from the source you should be able to use it for as long as the broadcasters decide to keep it. I'm not sure of the guide's accuracy with cable though as I believe it applies to off-the-air channels and only those channels.
It's kind of a moot point anyway since with a cable box you have several much more advanced ways to get the same information like interactive program guides.

I confirmed with TVMAX, they are upgrading to digital per the FCC ruling. I will HAVE to rent a converter box for each TV @ $4.00 each, monthly & my monthly rate will increase by $4.00 as well.
I will also have to put a credit card on my account with them or pay a "hefty" deposit for each box.

they are upgrading to digital per the FCC ruling.
But there is no FCC ruling that requires cable operators to change to digital. Tell them that and see what they say. It's one thing to decide to go digital at the same time but they shouldn't lie about the reason.
