Something strange seems to be happening to one of our IP phones (IP5122). The phone was working fine then one day when I picked up on the intercom I got an interrupted dial tone then steady dial tone, then interrupted again etc. Then when I tried to dial another extension the call went through as expected but there was no sound transmitted in either direction after the call was answered. I removed and re-installed the extension and the problem went away until just today when it came back up. Again, interrupted dial tone and subsequent intercom malfunctioning. What's going on here?
Thanks for any thoughts.

Try another port on the network switch or try another phone.

Is this an inside/enterprise set, or an outside/teleworker set? If inside try what Pat said and/or change all the associated patch cords. Also, how is the set powered, POE or power brick? If outside, what router are you using?

It's an outside/teleworker setup. The interrupted dial tone may be unrelated. I ran across a description in the manual about a DND tone and I think the interruption was just that.
I can make outside calls on the extension flawlessly. It's just intercom calls that have the sound problem and the interrupted dial tone. I would have ruled out any cord/power/router issues based on that. Right?

Another thought... could activating DND trigger a sound problem with intercom calls?

No. Activating DND just gives stutter dialtone. I have a feeling that the issue is network/router based. The ultimate test would be to plug the phone directly into the router/modem by itself and see if the problem persists.

DND/CFD will give you stutter DT. With what has been posted so far Q & A, I would start looking at the Firmware and Software of the IPU card & System. Having a 5100 series set I would suspect that it is current IP4K-1G0 or better. Also, make sure the GW is setup on the CIX and the IPU card. Is this the only IPT doing this? If so, the cause could be at the User Side. If not the direction Pat is taking you is sound.

Just now I tried plugging the affected phone directly into the remote worker's building Ethernet jack (leaving them without internet on their computer) and the phone made a successful intercom call. We switched back to connect through the router and the problem cropped up again. Strong indication that the problem is occurring at the router. This seems counter-intuitive. I would have thought that if it were network/router based, it would affect all calls and not just intercom.
BTW, it was the DND that was giving the stutter dial tone so that was a bit of a red herring.
Anyhow, I'll get a new higher quality router in this location and hope that solves it. The router here is a cheaper and older Netgear router.

Netgear routers are notorious for not playing well with IP phones.
