Before digital came along we could do this. Has anyone ever hooked up and external ringer / bell on a DKT extension? If so, how do I get started.

Back in the day we used to wire a paging horn into the speaker leads in the phone.

That works but it also means any conversation on the speaker phone also goes out over the horn.

If you have regular phone lines you can install something like a Viking PA-2A in front of the phone system. But this will ring when all lines ring. If you want to only ring when a single extension rings, then set up and analog port, have that analog port ring when statoin Number xxx rings and the attach a valcom V9925A to that analog station port, which is a horn that has a tone generator built into it. You could also use any of the cooper wheelock devices like VPS unit with or without a strobe light, but they are not as loud as the V9925A. Also, the TelBel would work find for this and is just a loud bell. You can phone me if you need any immediate assistance. And here is a blog post about the same subject https://phonesystems.wordpress.com/...or-horn-ring-when-your-phone-lines-ring/

also, i think that *some* of the toshiba phones have an external port that can be installed in the phone that you can attach that telbel or v9925a to. I would need to know the model of your phone

PI-DKT will allow you to use a DKT port and ring over a horn or speaker, but it won't drive a bell.

HESB external speaker connects to the HHEU card inside the handset. That is the way to go and volume control is on the HESB unit
