We have a Toshiba Strata, and also we're currently using some Polycom WiFi phones.

I had an idea that I could use the built-in SIP client in my N97 to use the Toshiba as well. But I can't get it to work.

I found a post from here earlier which goes through the settings.

I have a separate voice VLAN, where the Toshiba and phones are. For testing purposes, I enabled routing at the firewall between the Toshiba IP interface and the Internet, assigning it a static IP. And indeed, I can ping the Toshiba's IP address. So routing seems to be fine.

Most of the settings I got from the CFG files that the TFTP server sends to the Polycoms. I ws basically trying to replace one of them with the N97, replicating all the settings. One thing that I noted was that it only lists Proxy Server address, not a Registrar server address.

And then there's the username, and password. Now in the N97 settings, do I put this username in the "Public Username" field or Proxy Server username, or both? Or Registrar Server?

What could I be missing? It should be possible to configure the N97 to use the Toshiba, right? What about Realm? Also in the CFG file I see a line
CODECS = g711u, g711a
PROXY1_TYPE = TOSHIBA

Are there equivalent settings on the Nokia for these?

Lastly, would it help to install a SIP client on a computer, and then try to get that to connect?

Thanks!

try this: these are the settings for the E51 & E71 not sure about the N97 some of the Nokia phones don't all work like the E65 I couldnt get to work at all.

Nokia E51 or E71 SIP Settings

1. Go to Tools / Settings / Connection / SIP settings. Create the following profile Profile name:

Profile name: 200 (sip extension number)
Service Profile: IETF
Default Access point: (my office wifi point)
Public user name: sip:(extension no)@192.168.254.200 (IP address of LIPU/MIPU)
Use compression: No
Registration: Always on
Use security: No

Proxy server:
Proxy server address: sip:@192.168.254.200 (IP address of LIPU/MIPU)
Realm: 192.168.254.200
User name: 200 (sip extension number)
Password: **** (sip extension password)
Allow loose routing: Yes
Transport Type: UDP
Port:5060

Registrar Server:
Registrar serv. address: sip:@192.168.254.200 (IP address of LIPU/MIPU)
Realm: 192.168.254.200
User name: 200 (sip extension number)
Password: **** (sip extension password)
Allow loose routing: Yes
Transport Type: UDP
Port:5060

2. Go to Tools / Settings / Connection / Internet Tel. Settings

Create a new profile for 200 (call it Office 200)
Select SIP Profile 200

3. Reboot the Nokia phone

Thanks, but I think these are the instructions I used earlier...

Now, wherever you have an IP address, I see that you have configured the private IP address. I have a 1-1 NAT configured, ie. I have a public IP address, and all traffic to that IP is forwarded to the private IP address of the Toshiba.

Would I use the public IP address in all of these settings?

Also, would 1-1 NAT be a problem in general?

1-1 NAT can cause one way speech issues.
Why don't you try it on the local network to prive that it will all work then change the settings to use the public IP.

Here's what I did. I got Linphone and installed it on a laptop. This way I can easily change settings to test it.

If I connect the laptop to the voice VLAN, same as the IP card, I can dial out, but I can not receive calls. Oddly enough, when I dial in, the phone says "Extension vacant", but Linphone still rings.

When I try the phone VLAN with the Nokia, I get Registration failed...

Separately, there does seem to be a problem related to routing and/or firewall, since Linphone can do something when in the same VLAN, but not from another one.

Not all SIP softphones on PC's work.

I have had some fun and games in the past trying to work out why they don't seems to work.

So here are a few that do work and can be used for testing.
1. 3CX Phone
2. XLite
3. FaramPhone
4. SJphone
5. NCH talkphone

Give one of those a go and retest incoming and outgoing calls, I like the 3CX phone and it works well transferring calls etc.

When you have tested it on the VLAN using a soft sip phone try the simmilar settings in the Nokia N97.

Thanks, will do. Even the Linphone was the third I tried, but I think I saw it being mentioned somewhere here...
