Started servicing 4896.

System has 3 digital station cards,4 analog station cards,1 co line card.

One of the issues is when any internal call is made, both caller and called party hear a momentary burst of noise.lasts for about a second.I heard it once in about 50 test calls.

Im told the noise can last longer.call could be analog to analog, digital to analog, does not seem to have a pattern.

I don't have much to offer, but until recently, one of my customers was struggling with noise on a 4896. It was on every type of call whether internal or external. Sort of garbled the audio and could still hear and be heard but it was really annoying.

We tried everything short of a new CPU card and eventually replaced the entire thing with a new system.

I don't have a whole lot to offer, either--but you might try:
1. Shut down system
2. Reseat all cards
3. Check & reseat all amphenol connectors
4. Start system up

If that doesn't help--then try to establish some sort of a pattern---are there certain estensions that are involved? Time of day? Anything at all. It will be important for the customer to help you on this---because if you can't find out that it's something solvable---they'll either have to live with it or start replacing cards--and eventually get a newer system. Good luck. Let us know what you find out.

The second card (from the right), to the left of the processor card is the (I can't remember the designation, but I think it's the VCM) is the one that controls voice paths. That's likely your culprit, but I have never seen one fail. Have you replaced it?

Have not replaced any cards yet.

Were having receptionist log every call when problem happens.Hoping to see a pattern.

dws description of the noise sounds right.
Could you duplicate it consistently or was it intermittent.

It was on every call. We pulled out every station and trunk card out of the system except the first one and then and only then could call station to station and it was clear. Adding cards one-by-one back into the equation gave us ambiguous results. The customer gave up and asked us to replace it with an XTS.

Ironically, the day before the cutover, the noise when away. The XTS when in anyway and they lived happily ever after. wink

The 4896 had several issues that were addressed as time went on. If you are still having problems, check the software release and see if there is a newer version available. Next, try to get the customer to log when & where it happens. You can connect a PC or laptop and collect info on an event trace and match the incident with an event.
