Hi folks, I am thinking I might need some type of VOIP tester.I posted a topic not long ago about my voip endpoints not working well on a dsl circuit. My customer has a XTScIP Vodavi system with an 8-port VOIP card. My customer has provided me with my own dsl. Today I am bench testing two telephones (7024D). They seemed to work good for awhile and then unexplainedly drop off the network. Sometimes they work for 10 min. Sometimes for 20 or 30 min. Both my dsl and my customer's dsl have good throughput. 5Mbps download and 656k upload. I have set up continuous ping for the last 6 hrs. and see numbers at -100ms. Router set to DHCP.
I thought maybe my router or his might be refreshing at intermittent rates but not even sure that would cause this problem. It might be my dsl modem since I have had it for many years. I tried the free VisualRoute 2007 Lite Edition as a tester and seemed to give out good information, but for the real tester they want +$90 and yearly license for + $100. For the VOIP I,m doing I don't mind spending the money, I was just wondering if anyone has used anything else. I did't really want to go out and start replacing stuff for fun.

Ted:

Is the KSU's software at least version 2.20? I have seen this exact thing occur on an XTS that has lower software in it when using the 7024 phones. The phones will function, but only intermittently.

Hi Ed, the version is 2.21-2fe3. I'm watching the phone and the ping. So far the ping is staying steady at -80ms. About three times an hour I get one hit at anywhere from 1500ms to 4000ms. I check the phone after each of these hits and it doesn't seem to correlate. I have watched the ping at a constant -75ms for 5 min and the phone still goes down. I have used the phone while I've gotten the high hits and it works fine. The phone just seems to go out at random intervals. I have my guy out at the sight to check all our programming. Is there a time out timer from inactivity that I don't know about or anything else anyone knows? I am going to call the dreaded tech service (I shouldn't say that, they try their best to help) and see if they have any other solutions.
Thanks for any response.

Hi Everyone, Tech support has an update file (c2ag) for the 8-port voip card. They also ask me to upgrade my 7024D phones to the new 10EP file which together is supposed to correct my problem. I hope this helps anyone in the future. I am installing now. I will post after the weekend.

I use a program called Ethereal that really helps troubleshooting VOIP, plus its free.

Thanks for the information Ironhedz, I will try it. The update on my phones is that with the new software we installed, the phones work just fine. I am still confused how everyone I talk to says they have no problems with these phones. I spent way more time than I wanted to in researching a problem that seems tech support knew of in advance. Here's another case in point. My 7024D keysets do not work handsfree on intercom without pressing a button on the dial pad. Wooppee! They say their working on a software fix. I hope my post helps others.
Thanks for everyones help, Ted
