Am I missing something? I am trying to connect to STS system and system sits like a bump on a log. NOTHING. Have followed exact proceedures in manual. Never had issue with hyperterm before and when connecting to other devices my laptop is fine. Is there something in phone programming that needs to allow laptop connection?
Thanks!

Just a straight thru cable connected at 9600 to the top serial port on the KSU.

Tried that. Also tried using null modem cable on the inskin voice mail. No luck. I noticed the null cable is connected from inskin to the bottom serial port. Normal on this device?

The null modem cable is used to connect the KSU's internal modem to the voice mail card for remote programming. Have you tinkered with the baud rate? It's possible that someone else may have changed it in flash programming. Other than that, there's really no magic to it. Hitting enter should yield you a password entry prompt.

Thanks a alot folks! Yeah I tried all normal baud rates 300-1200-2400 but not even getting jibberish across the screen.
Tried both straight through as well as null modem cables. Am I correct in assuming that the voice mail serial port that connects to internal modem also is used for direct connect programming?
My first try at Vodavi. I have a manual and can usually pick up on this stuff relatively easy but this oe has me stumped. Doing it as a favor for a friend who can not find a dependable Vodavi service provider in the area of Cape Cod. As long as there is no phone programming or dip switches that would prevent direct connect programming I'll try again later.

If it's programmed properly, then yes, the KSU modem card can have two extensions. 499 is for KSU programming and 498 is for voice mail programming. There really isn't any programming to interfere with the connection of a laptop other than baud rates. You might try going UP from 9600; someone may have changed this to speed up a database backup.

Have you verified that you do not have SMDR turned on for Port 1?

Make sure that you have ICLID Features (Flash 56, Button 1) disabled. If this feature is enabled for Port 1, you will not be able to program.
