Greetings All,

We just installed an XTS-IP in a county commissioners office. They have a 2nd building (40 phones) that is currently on it's own system, but they want to connect that building into the new XTS and buy the additional phones. Distance is my problem - It looks like we're just over the 1,000 ft. max to the farthest stations in the 2nd building (including a 650 ft. parking lot). We could obviously set up a KSU in the 2nd building and connect with VOIP cards, but I'm concerned that will take us back into an extended RFP process. Does Vodavi/Vertical have repeaters to increase their max length of a station loop? If so, has anybody out there used them? If not, does anybody have any other recommendations?

You could do a combo of IP and digital phones. Put the furthest ones out as IP phones connected by fiber to the main system with an IP card, and make the closer phones digital, running fiber with the feed cable would not be that much more costly since you are (presumably) running a feed anyway....just an idea.

Yes, they do make an extender for the XTS phones, the DTIBL. It will extend the digital phone port to 3000 feet. However, you will not want to purchase these for 40 phones as they'll cost as much (or more) than a 30-button phone and you'll need one for each phone.

You really should not need these. The manufacturers stated max loop limit is 1000'. I've got some phones that are just over this limit with no problems, and I know another dealer who does as well. As long as you use the proper cabling and protection, you should be fine.

However, if you purchased another system and tied the two together with VoIP, you would be able to route your 911 calls easier.

I agree with Larry.

If your useing 24 ga. wire at the extended building
you might want to double your pairs if you have
pairs avaiable to help push your loop limit some.

I have exceded the published loop limits with varried results. As long as the cable splices are clean and limited to as few as posable I have reached distances up to 1500 feet with out problems. Remember to balance your loads evenly throughout the cards. I recomend low voltage lightning protection such as ONEAC. One problem that does come to mind. I did have constant problems with Wander's attatched to stations placed on the outer limits.

Larger gauge cable will make quite a difference. The specs are built on 24 gauge which is 39 feet per ohm go to 22 gauge and you almost double that (62 feet per ohm) so your 1000ft becomes almost 2000ft. Go to 19 gauge and you can push it out to 3000ft. Of course you need to do all this in the planning stage not after the fact, it'd be cheaper than a bunch of range extenders.
