I use one and have no problems, but I have seen threads on here about those who have had the problem. I'd suggest the obvious like are you choosing the correct serial port on your laptop to connect with ? I'd try them all just to see. Also, are you using a straight through db9 cable or a null modem cable ? It should be straight through. Other than that, maybe check the system baud rates. Did you run the disk that came with the adapter ?
I had the same problem... I solved it by buying a different brand of usb to serial adaptor The first adaptor I bought was a Belkin it wouldn't work I got a Dynex on ebay and it would work on the Harddrive voicemail but not on some other applications. I don't know why they all don't work the same.
I have had a few of them and found Belden has a unit that works with out any issues. I have installed them on some desktops for remote access to the VM and system. They also have an off brand on eBay that works well and is alot cheaper.
The only trouble that I have ever had was with the hard drive based voicemail systems. I agree, the cheap adapter has served me well. There have been my "problem children" but a mouse, keyboard, and monitor have been able to keep them in line. We use a cross-connect cable after that if it does not have a persistent internet connection.
