I have a Starplus STS phone and cannot seem to use any form of recording device to record calls. I have the Radio Shack Telephone Recording Control 43-228A attached and I can use the phone normally, so I know the sound is going in and out, but for some reason nothing comes out of the microphone jack. Is thare something I'm doing wrong?

I think that model goes between the phone and the wall jack. It will not work with a digital station on the STS. www.usbcallrecord.com has one that will work connecting the same way as the one you have. You can use one that connects between the phone and the handest that will record to a conventional tape recorder.
You can also get a pickup style at radioshack that has a suction cup microphone that will also connect to a tape recorder.

You can also record if you have voice mail in the system.

You could also use the digital extension recorder from Vertical by Comvergent and have the calls downloaded to a pc.

www.usbcallrecord.com is Comvergent. The Digital 01 is the extension recorder. It has several options and we use them quite a bit. The Police Departments love them since they can use them behing thier dictaphone equipment, it is easy to use, and exporting to WAV files for email is just a click away. You can also use it as a room recorder.

The big advantage is that it records every call (or call that exceds a timer so you don't get a bunch of short calls saved) without user intervention. You can add notes to a recording or have it prompt you to add notes after every call. Worth every penny.
