Does anyone know of any answering machines that will just play the outgoing message and not take a message from a caller?

I think that some at&t-branded anwering machines will do that.

I think that the DVA-500A from Viking Electronics might be what you are looking for. It will play an announcement for callers. I believe that Viking also makes various other devices that function similarly.

I know that I HAVE seen some AT&T models that had an "Announce Only" switch.

yeah, those were the words i was looking for Dave!!! Announce only! I new there were some out there but i can't seem to find a source for some of the part numbers that i have.
still on the search!

Check out at&t's consumer telephone website. https://telephones.att.com/telephones_ui/index.cfm The AT&T/Lucent 1715, 1725 & (I think) AS40 had the AO feature. They have been off the market for several years, but examples can often be found on eBay.

Google " Recorder Announcer". You'll get quite a few hits in all sorts of price ranges.
That's what we called them at GTE. We installed the rack mounted ones in COs and PBXs for intercept messages and the like.
