Man, have you priced out 12/3 SJ or SJO lately? That stuff is insane. Skip's son would be having to juggle the cost of the wedding vs: the cost of the cable!
I'd refrain from purchasing extension cords from the big box stores because the connectors are always inferior and they are all cheap imports.
As for the NEC thing, the rules are fairly lax for temporary wiring (30 days or less), so I think that any temporary rig for just an afternoon would be OK.
I'd go with the Romex idea since it is a one-use deal. The Romex can be coiled back up and used for a permanent application at a later date. If paid out hand-over-hand so that it doesn't get twisted, recovery and reuse should be a piece of cake. It could even be resold if necessary.

Update , looks like their going with a battery powered Cd Player .
the Ceremony is in the park and the reception is in a nearby hall so I would expect less than an a hour actual use .
Rehearsal is Thur night and he's going to try the battery powered and let me know for sure .
I've got 175' of 12 ga and another 150' of 16 ga so I would be inclined to use the 12 /16 combo or see about renting a couple of 100' 12
I just called and I can rent a 100' of 12 ga for $16 for 24 hrs
I appreciate all the input , its been a informative discussion

Skip ...congratulations to your son.
Find a carpenter and borrow a generator and/or power cords for the day. If you was closer to Maine you could use mine.

You can get a wireless extension cord that works up to 100ft and then all you have to do is add a simple TIE [transduct inter-relay extender] to add the second wireless extension cord and so forth...
Hope the wedding went well, Dean
