I've actually got the opposite issue where I was trying to get GCL and property/theft insurance but they wouldn't issue me any. Since I don't have roaming employee's, do any on-site work, or have a retail storefront I don't represent a big enough MRC for the underwriters to even look it. It took me 3 months and literally dozens of agents before I could find one who was interested enough in us to spit out a policy.
The good news is that it wasn't that expensive for us. The bad news is it took 3 months to find.

James, when I first started I had a similar insurance issue....and ended up with what is called "Inland Marine" insurance to cover liability and materials. Now our trade is listed as an "Occupation" by most insurers.

When I opened my Interconnect Contracting Business in 1974 the insurance companies either wanted to list me as an electrical contractor or as a telephone utility.
The rates were astronomical.
In the end I found a distant cousin who had an insurance business. He listed me as if I was a Burglar Alarm installer - Low voltage wiring only - and then the rates suddenly became affordable.

You have to be careful there. If you do work outside of whatever they define as an "office machines installer" and you have a claim they may deny it.
That's and old story. I have heard of roofers (who pay a high premium) getting listed as general contractors or carpenters to get a lower rate. Somebody falls off the roof and insurance won't pay.
Insurance companies are scum and will look for any excuse not to pay. I would suggest that you not give them one.

Hal, even though California has a license classification (C-7) for low-voltage installation, the insurance companies still have not recognized it as a trade.

Well, that's probably a question only your insurance broker can answer. If your classification does not include installation of LV wiring in buildings, ladder work, etc. then you need to get classified to one that does. I can certainly understand your pain if that would have to be an EC, but there is no sense in paying a low rate for insurance if it doesn't cover you.
