guys he has already determined the problem he just does'nt know proper testing and how a circuit works.

When I used to install analog PBXs and test ground start trunks, I didn't bother using a 3rd lead (ground wire), I just set my butt set off hook and put one clip on Ring and the other to ground. That drew dial tone with just two leads. TelCo sent a ground on tip during the ring to prevent glare.

BTW, If you left your butt set on monitor (not off hook because Al is correct), grounding ring would give you a dial tone.

Mndave thats right it will work but you should , get dialtone with both clips and then try dialing just for drill.

I'm positive the incoming lines are GS.The extensions dialed afterwards are in the premesis. I'll try to reverse polarity when go back.Thanks for all the info.I'll post the results.

Well, I am confused. The only types of trunks that I know about where you can "dial in and reach extensions on the pbx" are either:
DIDs or
Tie Lines.

Every Analog DID I ever dealt with was Loop and then either Wink, Immediate or Delay Dial - but NOT Ground Start.

Tie Lines were usually E&M, either 2 wire or 4 Wire and there's no way you could mistake an E&M trunk for anything else. There were non E&M tie lines that we saw very, very rarely, but they were loop too.

So what is this trunk supposed to do? How does it work? You ground one side of the circuit and then you get dial tone FROM THE PBX and then you dial an extension in the PBX?

I'm a little confused.

But I find that happening more and more as I get older and less useful.

Could be either. But it still doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Apparently the tech who is writing in the question has nothing to do with the PBX - which only makes troubleshooting that much harder.
