When I am ready for a new phone(soon) what would you recommend? I only have one number but will have one hard wired and one portable. Is this just a case of go to Best Buy?

Pretty much. Couldn't tell you the model number, but just had a customer put in a Uniden cordless from WalMart, has very good sound quality.

Check the websites of the various manufacturers to see what models they offer. Uniden, Panasonic, VTech and at&t are the most common brands out there. (at&t branded telephones have been manufactured by VTech since 2000). The consumer telephone market has changed quite a bit over the last few years. Best Buy used to devote 1 or 2 pages in its Sunday circulars to telephones. When you went to the store, there were lots of models on display to choose from. Today, a Sunday circular might feature one or two models, but more often than not, you won't find any landline telephones listed at all. Shelf space in the stores has been reduced quite a bit as manufacturers either go out of business or scale back on the number of models they offer.

One of the problems with consumer telephones is that messages that are left on the answering machines tend to sound awful (at least compared to what you get with a commercial voicemail system).
The audio quality of VTech's (and at&t's answering machines that are made by VTech) leaves much to be desired. That's the primary reason I installed a Partner ACS at the house. Even the Partner Voice Messaging PCMCIA card dances circles around VTech's answering machines.
