I'm new to phone systems (exp w/Toshiba Stratagy at work), but at church they have a NEC system and NEC phones.

They don't have VM setup, but I wanted to help them get that going. Any help would be appreciated.

I just peeked at the system and the box says 'Electra Elite 192'.

It has 4 parallel ports on the right side. I'm thinking I'll need to look inside to see what cards are in it.

How do I know what they have or need to get a VM system working?

P.S. They currently have 18 extension on this system and I believe are using the phone co. as a VM service).

Open up the cover, 1 screw at lower right hand side of the cover, slide cover to right and out front.

Look at the cards, from the left hand side. Lower corner of card should have designations like CPUB(X)-U10, ESI(8)-U10 etc.

Please post the type of cards in each of the slots in your cabinet.

To get voicemail going, you will need to purchase a FMS(X) or VMS(X) for your system. The X in each of the above indicates the number of voicemail ports that can be accessed simultaneously. Of course, this depends on the number of lines you are handling, and also the anticipated call volume / usage volume.

to add to the vm list:

cms, vmp

note that the cms,fms are limited to 40 users max! and like 3 hours of storage. the cms doesn't have softkeys or live record. both are compactflash based.

the vms is hard drive based. unlimited mailboxes. live record, softkeys are all there too. but it is a hard drive and it can go out. over 100 hours of storage.

the vmp is the latest. compactflash or drive based. storage on the cf based depends on what you order. same with mailbox amounts if i remember right.

all come in different port amounts (IE 2,4,8 ports available to answer calls, listen to vm's etc)

Good news is that your CPU appears to be relatively recent, software R8000+, so most of your features etc should be pretty up to date.

Your system as it now stands will support 8 lines, and 24 phone extensions. If your installation site is a pretty busy one, then for sure a 4 port voice mail is a must. The price difference between 4 port and 2 port is sometimes very small, and if you are patient, you should be able to find a 4 port VMS for a much more reasonable price than what you were thinking.

Read through this thread again, and make your own determination as to which of the VM cards you want. Each of the VMS/FMS/CMS/VMP have their own benefits / limitations. If you are looking on Ebay, you would most likely find FMS/VMS's. Whereas CMS/VMP is mostly available only from dealers. Depending on how much storage capacity you need, and also your fear of the hard-drive going south on you, those are the key factors on what your final selection would be.

Installing the VM is relatively simple, but make sure you have the necessary docs for the VM system that you get. It would be very helpful for you to understand the inner workings and how to make the best use out of your investment dollars in that VM system.

For that price you can get a whole new PBX with VoIP.

If you have a spare PIII or P4 and 256 mb of ram you can utilize your broadband connection and have a full blown Asterisk PBX system.

IAX supports 92 simultaneous calls over a 1.5 mb connection. Asterisk handles Voicemail, IP Phones, analog phones, etc
