Just had a caller inquire about putting a PRI on his Asterisk phone system. We specialize in NEC, I have never heard of the Asterisk. Does anyone know who makes it and is it compatible with PRI?

Try asking Kumba about this one.

The quick and dirty, Everyone makes it. It's an open source program the uses the LINUX OS. YES, it is compatible with PRI. If you want to research without Kumba, just do a search of Sundance for ASTERISK. There are probably 20+ threads about it, with links to downloadable books and programs and parts sources. Or google/dogpile/any search engine. John C.

As mentioned, it's open source, so it's made by thousands of programmers. The largest controlling source is Digium, the company that sponsors the project. Being open source means that there is no charge for the software. As with most things open source, there are thousands of companies using the software with a different skin or management interface like lightning horse said. Some of the most successful examples of this is Fonality, Trixbox, Elastix, AsteriskNOW, etc.
It supports T1 and PRI. Supported PRI protocols are going to be NI2, 5ESS, 4ESS, DMS-100, and NI1.
I would recommend Sangoma for the T1 card. If you will be having a lot of heavy inbound IVR traffic or faxes then I would also recommend getting the hardware echo cancellation.
