The music fades out and in and it is really static like a weak analog signal.
Here are further information about our system:
-external moh is a digital radio with 3.5jack connected directly to phone system. (no LIU)
-we do use VOIP (read it could cause problems with quality as well)
would a mono cable fix the problem? or is a LIU required? or both?

For general MOH quality issues, some things to check are:
Is what you're hearing through MOH what the MOH source is doing? Disconnect the MOH source and put it straight to a speaker or headset. Your source may be getting poor reception or may have been recorded poorly.
Is any cabling running alongside a power cord or other mains? Is any cabling running alongside a fluorescent light ballast? (Had a Nortel CICS once with a hissing on all speakers. Found a 110V power cable lying alongside the MOH source. Separated the two, and suddenly the users reported hearing music from all speakers -- could I turn it off? Turns out the hissing was b/c "background music" was turned on, and the hiss was the MOH.)
Do you have the proper cable end (RCA vs. 1/8 phono, etc.)? This may cause a cable to sometimes work, sometimes not, as it "sort of" makes/breaks contact.
What happens if you put your tone generator to the MOH input (Cut a cable and strip the conductors to allow clip-on)? If your tone generator gives a steady tone, that points to MOH source, if not, to a system issue.

The system itself is fine. we got the sv8100 just a few weeks before. Quality of internal moh is fine
The reception of the radio is excellent. But the cable from digital radio to moh input is quite long and not really shielded. I'm using a 3.5mm stereo, 3m cable but i get the same results with a shielded 3.5mm stereo, 1.5m cable.
The question is, if a LIU is essential to guarantee the sound quality? 600ohm vs. 4ohm? Might be a stupid question but I have to be sure before I tell the procurement department to get me one.
