My cousin called me to come out and look at his NEC switch. He currently has the following -
BOS 8-Slot KSU, Part No: 8001
66101205
DK7NA-112

He has a T-1 PRI from Telepacific currently running the switch but is getting Time Warner fiber to the facility (5 mpbs up & 5 mbps down). TW told him they can provide a T-1 PRI circuit and he can use the same switch for his voice lines. They will also give him 20 DID lines. Can he change service providers and PRI circuits without a lot of provisioning and hassle?

If -- and it's a big if -- the PRIs are provisioned EXACTLY the same (i.e. AMI/D4 or B8ZS/SF/ESF) then he should be able to unplug one at the smart-jack (or NIU) and plug in the other.

As for the DIDs -- did they say 20 lines, or 20 numbers in a block on the PRI? And is his system currently programmed for DIDs? Either way, the numbers TW gives him will be different from any programming currently on the switch. So the real answer to your real question ("Is my brother gonna have to pay a phone tech to come out?") is "Yes."

Best bet: Call his vendor, from whom he bought the switch. The vendor can not only arrange to make a smooth transition from Telepacific to TW, he can also program up those DID AND explain to your brother how to use them.

Now, the tricky part is gonna be this right here: Take your brother aside and discreetly explain that just because you're a TCP/IP techie, that doesn't mean that you know everything about all electronic systems; and that phones are a specialty within the tech arena.

Hi telephone guy and thanks for your help. The existing installer (maybe Telepacific tech?)told my cousin that he has a Supertrunk with analog lines riding a T1 line, it's not a full PRI, and that is why their phone system is not capable of running from a PRI system. Does that make sense. Either way I told my cousin he has to thoroughly investigate the situation before committing to the new bandwidth. They don't want to have massive phone system downtime because of an obvious incompatibility.

The above situation is in Panorama City (the valley) near L.A. in case there are some NEC techs here that service that area.

Have your cousin call in a NEC certified tech and have him or her inventory the system. With that information they will be able to tell what the existing configuration is and guide the company in the right direction.

BF, it looks like Telepacific may be using a "Channelbank" to provide service.

Dans is exactly correct. Until a certified NEC tech gets eyes on the system, there's no way to know what you're dealing with.

The NECCARE website lists these dealers in the general area:

... On second thought, please look them up yourself. www.neccare.com, and select "customer support" "find a reseller."
I used 90210, the only LA zip code that I could recall (DOH!) but if my Geography is not completely off, I think ***** is in the Valley.

Thanks a lot telguy and dans - excellent advice. My cousin gets it now as I forwarded him these emails. He realizes he could have a major outage unless he determines compatibility.
