We currently have six NEC DTU-16D phones in our office total with no voice mail system in place. We have looked into setting up the voice mail system with these phones, but the cost is too much. My question is: if we purchased a different phone (example: Panasonic KX-TS4300B) and only changed two of the phones so they have the digital voice mail built in would our other four NEC phones still work?Just looking for the most cost effective way to go with having a least two voice mail systems. Currently we have an old answering machine which is not private for the two employees.

No.

The DTU-16D is made specifically for NEC Electra Elite telephone systems (which is what you have on the wall somewhere in your building, for those phones to connect to).

They will not work on any other phone system, nor will they work at your house. They can be "tricked" into working with certain other NEC telephone systems, such as the 2000IPS. But not on a Panasonic, no way, no how.

If you want HTG voicemail, your best bet is to put an Elitemail Card into your existing Elite Phone System. Your second best bet is to get an analog voicemail such as an Active-voice Lingo and put it onto analog ports on your phone system (like the ones where the answering machines are now).

Anything else would be a cheap cobble-together work-around.
