Our office uses the NEC Dterm 80 phones. We would like to change the number of times a phone rings before the call is transferred to voicemail. We have set the number of rings before the voicemail answers, but that didn't work as we needed.

Scenario: Someone calls an employee, that employee's phone only rings 2-3 times and the call is gone to voicemail and that employee cannot answer the call. However, the voicemail is set to answer after 8 rings, so the caller hears the phone ringing for 8 times before they get the voicemail's outgoing message.

How can we change the number of rings on that employee's phone to 6 rings?

Are you the system administrator for this NEC PBX? If not, I would advise you to hire a NEC technician to make the change as it is usually done in system programming, the feature is called call forward no answer timer & is almost always a system wide setting, but that depends on the type of NEC PBX. Btw, what kind of NEC PBX? Dterm 80 is just the phone set model type which can work on various NEC systems.

First, this is a systemwide change. So you can't change it for one phone.

Secondly, the number of rings you hear when calling is not related to the number of rings when you're being called. Try calling a phone in the same office, and on one hand count rings you hear through the phone, on the other count actual rings. You'll see what I mean.

The noise you hear when you call someone is not really "ringing" -- it's just a tone, called "ringback tone," so that you know that the phone is ringing. It doesn't match real ring timing.

You can make the voicemail answer more quickly -- as IPKII said, this requires system administrator access -- Or you can adjust the no-answer timer to give you more rings at the desk.

A real telephone Ring is a six-second cycle. For two seconds it rings, then for four seconds it pauses:

**----**----**----**---- Would be 24 seconds, or four complete rings.
