Hey guys, I'm an old telephone man and don't know much about computers. (I had hoped I would retire or die before I needed to know anything about them - rat bastard Bill Gates). But now, I have Roadrunner broadband service at home and I've heard people say I should install a firewall. What is it and how do I do it? Thanks!

You can go down to COMP USA or any computer store and pick up a (D-Link makes a good one for a good price, about $90.00) router with a built in firewall. your broadband connection goes into it and then you plug up to four pc's in it for internet and network sharing or you can just use it for 1. A firewall keeps others from hacking into your computer and keeps your end safe. You should also invest in Norton Virus protection. By the way I liked your post >>(I had hoped I would retire or die before I needed to know anything about them - rat bastard Bill Gates)<< cracked me up ![[Linked Image from sundance-communications.com]](https://www.sundance-communications.com/forum/biggrin.gif) [This message has been edited by dtmf (edited September 12, 2003).]

Hmmm, yeah.
A router is more of an indirect firewall. It does indeed block most communication because any requests to a particular port are blocked as they have no destination (unless you specify a destination...) so it's more like a roadblock.
Rather than doing that...
Windows XP has a built in firewall that's activated by going to your TCP/IP properties under Network Connections, and enabling the firewall (it's the last tab on the right).
Software firewalls are available for any windows distribution.
Routers, or any physical firewall are the best... but possibly more expensive.
If I were you... I'd simply stick to a software solution, make sure you stay up to date with windows patches, and most of all... disable windows messaging service by going to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services and placing Messaging Service or Windows Messaging Service on Manual start, that will disable it.

I'm afraid not. Windows ME is a repacked Windows 98SE.
