I used to help my father manage networks before I became a telcom tech. I have setup my Linksys wireless-G router on a broadband cable modem at my house, and one of my friends' house. I would like to set up a virtual LAN to connect the two, but I am not sure how. Can anyone help? ------------------ Telradmaniac [email protected]

i think what you want is a VPN (virtual private network).

Jsaad is correct. You'll need a router with VPN built in. You can get some of them fairly cheaply. We've had success with the Netgear FVS318. It's pretty simple to setup. https://www.netgear.com/products/details/FVS318.php

My Dad ordered new Linksys-G w/ built in VPN. What is the difference between VPN and VLAN? ------------------ Telradmaniac [email protected]

A Virtual Private Network (VPN) is used to connect a private network together over a non-private network, typically the internet.
A Virtual LAN (VLAN) is used to isolate segments of a network via software. For example, your accounting people can be in the group 192.168.0.x and your tech people can be in the group 192.168.1.x. Everyone is in the same building and can even be on the same switch. This isolates traffic and problems.
I would explain more to you however, you would soon realize that I am a phone tech and not a computer geek.
