May be a dumb question, but have any of you computer guys had an opportunity to work on the wireless networks the police use for their cruiser laptops? Are they regular pc's just linked with wireless LAN? The reason I ask is I have toyed with the idea of putting together a disk for each of the rugrats with current photos and such in the event they become lost or god forbid something worse. Just thought it would be a real benefit to have a disk I could hand over to the officer that he could send out to all the other cruisers almost immediately. Just wondering if regular old jpegs would work or not.

All of the police here have updated laptops running 2000 or better, I dont know about where you are though. Yes jpegs are fine and they can surf the web as well. The connections they use are secure too.

You could do what you're saying... but One exception might be that not every department handles their network the same way. Example would be our area... the mobile units are indeed on a secure network with the dispatch office... but ours do not have internet access per-se;
they have access to the wireless "in-house" network they belong to only, and when the dispatch office wants to pipe them internet routing, can they use what you think of like "internet". Generally they don't mess with it, seems the officers have other things to do.

It's the dispatch office's job to co-ordinate and research, etc. and usually the public affairs officer is set up to handle stuff like your JPEGs.

Invetigations is a 'whole 'nother aminal!

If it were me... I would take the JPEGs to the office, not to the car.

Follow standard EAS / Amber alert protocol. It'll be alot more productive, they'll post it to an inter-agency database like KidCare ID, FBI and such. Keep your reference number(s). I'd write it down, and update it every year as the kids grow up... nothing like the photo of a 5 year old to describe a 7th grader !!

The guy in the police car has other stuff to do than all that... needing the picture and surfing the web to get it and pass it around are two different things!

Consider posting some information to a web page. That may be more usable than anything. Then you wouldn't have to worry about how the picture makes it's way around.

95% of all laptops in police cars are on radio modem network. it runs at about 4800 baud not very fast at all so internet as it would be slow. i worked as the network tech for the sheriffs office here before i went to work for the school district. the police here tho uses a motorola system with radio modems on the VHF band and its nothing close tho wifi
