One of our users, has just received a new laptop we set up for him. He works from home often and is used to connecting the VPN over a wireless network and accessing Outlook. on the new laptop however, he cannot use Outlook. It says trying to connect then goes disconnected after a few seconds. this still works fine on old laptop. I tested over a public wireless network, and it worked fine, on his profile and everything. I don't get it.

any Ideas?

Have you checked the firewall software running on the new computer? Some firewall software blocks outgoing programs as well as incoming programs unless you permit them. Try turning off all firewall software on the PC as a test.

If you are using exchange, then you need to make sure the laptop is finding the domain. I suspect you have split tunneling going on. In other words all internet activity is going through his local connection including dns query, while shared resources are being pulled through the vpn. If this is the case he will never find you exchange server.

Please be more clear how the vpn is initiated, before or after login on to the laptop?

I tested this at a local restaurant, and it worked fine.
-Power on laptop
-Log in as local user(same as network login)
-connect to wireless network
-connect Cisco VPN Client, log in as network user
-open up outlook to check e-mail

He says: Drives are mapped, have access to network files, but Outlook won't connect to exchange.

He is the first one to have this problem since I started here.

I checked the Firewall settings, and the Firewall was on. I turned it off, and will test.

when he is here, he is connected to wired LAN. The problem is at his house with his Wireless network (ISP is comcast cable, plenty fast). I tested it from 2 different Wireless LANs, and it worked fine.

Yesterday, I turned his firewall off, it worked fine when I tested. He e-mailed me this morning saying that it did not work again. His old laptop works fine at home, and his firewall is actually enabled, so I seriously doubt his problems have anything to do with the Firewall (Windows).

I told him I will have to go to his house to t/s.
all I can figure is that he is doing something to make it not work.

An iD10t error with the ESTO module, probably.

If it isn't an iD10t error, could it be a disfunciontal EBKAC? I have seen these mess up computers pretty bad before.

Is the vpn connection successful? Can he navigate the remote network at all and it is only Outlook the problem is with. Does his network at home use the same addressing scheme as the network at work?

I went to his house yesterday evening to verify that what he said was true - it was, somewhat.
He said that he could access network drives - not so. I compared the Cisco VPN settings with the old laptop, and found that the Enable Transparent tunneling was checked when it shouldn't be. I unchecked it, and all worked great.

BTW, ESTO: Equip Smarter Than Operator. What is EBKAC?
