I just got a catalog from APC, the battery backup "folks". They make a fingerprint reader for around $49.00. It comes in three models: a USB model, a PC card model and a mouse model. It also encrypts your files.

Fingerprint scanners are easier to hack than you think.
Joe --- No trees were harmed as a result of this posting; however, many electrons were severely inconvenienced.

Just hack someone else finger off, them apply it to the pad....
Seriously, I do know that they're not 100% accurate, but the manual for the one we have recommends changing the finger profile for the user, if they get false-reads often. Like my index finger may be too similar to somone else, so I switch the recognized print in the system to read my thumb... or middle finger....

Personally, I think the best way to prevent the lost of your laptop would be cuff it to your wrist. But then...some idiot would try to jerk you whole arm off, if you walk through Harlem..etc..
Most thiefs are not computer geeks and intent to sell the lappy for $$$
Most anyone in the IT business, IF they wish, can break your password and get into the machine. LIke it was said above...easy thing to do is replace HD and OS... I've used the Linux program several times to recover a password.
