I doubt such a beast exists. If it does, it would probably be an obscure special order from China. USB->RS232 converters are cheap enough, I just keep a few of them around connected to the various cables and devices I need to use them with. One is always connected to a console cable for the Cisco routers, one is always connected to the adapter for our Adtran box, etc. So, buy two and keep one with a straight through cable and one with a null modem.

You can go to Radio shack and they have an USB to Serial adpter.. works great since most new laptops don't have the serial port.. I use mine to get into all my adtran gear..

This is kind of a sidetrack from the original post but I was wondering if anyone has come across a converter that can take RS-232 output from a COM port and translate it to a USB input on a printer. I don't know enough of how USB works to even know if it's possible. The reason I ask is interest in porting SMDR to an inkjet printer. I can find a serial-parallel converter that does the job but nobody makes an inkjet anymore that offers parallel input.

SMDR wouldn't be terribly practical in an inkjet would it? Inkjets are designed to print to a whole page at a time.... hooking up to an old-school dot matrix would be more practical.

I've actually got several properties running on inkjet. The data sits in the buffer and when a sheet loads up, it prints out. If they want to pull what's waiting, they just force the print. The application is hotel/motel call accounting printout. Front desk areas are notoriously crowded and call accounting printers get treated like the redheaded stepchild. Dot matrix usually means tractor feed and I'm constantly getting calls that the call accounting is printing only to find a box of travel size deodorants on top of the paper stack.
