I just got an email with a .jif image that caused Windows fax/picture viewer to launch. Clicking the foward arrow brought up tons of stuff, bits of websites and other pictures from old emails that should have been deleted long ago. Right clicking an image brought up properties- C:\Documents and Settings\Hal Bissinger\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\OL1B3\1.jpg
I regularly clear my temporary internet files so I did it again and this stuff is still there for the viewer. I open Windows explorer and go to C:\Documents and Settings\Hal Bissinger\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\ and see that everything has been cleared. Where is the folder OL1B3? All hidden and system files should be shown. I append \OL1B3 manually in the address bar and now it shows itself! I delete it and it is gone but the temporary internet files folder properties still shows over 5 megs of stuff that I can't see.
So the question is what is Windows XP doing saving and hiding this stuff and how do you see what it is?

Hal-
If you go to Start> Run> %temp% it will open your temporary folder.
You went to the right place for your Temporary Internet Files: Shortcut: Start> Run> %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
If you then go to Tools> Folder Options> View Tab>
Look for "Hidden Files and Folders> ^Show Hidden Files and Folders.
Hit OK...Now you won't have any hidden fodlers...I.E. the OL1B3 folder.
Microsoft designed Windows so secret, they don't even know what they're doing. I always leave "Show Hidden Files and Folders" checked, as I feel it is my privilege to know what my computer has on it/is doing.
Also a note, the %temp% folder is more than your Internet files, it is temporary files stored by your system... Tech support tells Vista users to clear that folder regularly in order to keep the system "speedy".

I absolutely agree. That's always been enabled, it's one of the first things I do when setting up a new machine. That's why I can't understand how those folders are still hidden and why they aren't cleared when you clear the temporary internet files.
It's them spying on us I tell ya!

Ok, so when I go to the command prompt I can display the "hidden" directories and files in the "empty" Temporary Internet Files folder. Nothing else works. And sure enough there is a new OLK8E folder with the .jpg's from an email today. It cannot be cleared except manually.

Wow Hal. When I check the "Show.." button, I see all of them and they all clear. They've got their eyes on you!

You sure? Right click on Temporary Internet Files after you clear it and look at the properties. Betcha it ain't empty. Then go to the command prompt, drill down to Temporary Internet Files and do dir. Tell me what you see.
Both this and my laptop with XP do the same thing.

Yep. If I have all of my web browsers closed, it will empty out, otherwise it keeps forcing garbage in from every site I visit. Naturally.

Going to make sure I'm doing that but I know most of that stuff in that "hidden" folder I deleted was years old and I clear my temporary folders at least every few days.
I can guarantee you that that \Temporary Internet Files\OLK8E folder (that replaced the one I deleted) with the pictures of the ducks I received in an email today won't go away. You wouldn't know it's there except for Windows fax/picture viewer displaying the content for some reson. I believe it used to do the same thing in Win 98 except you could see the folders in Windows Explorer.

Temporary Internet Files is for IE, but OLK8E is for Outlook. Telling IE to clear the temp files won't affect it and Outlook doesn't manage it either. It's likely the picture viewer has its own cache as well.

That's correct. It's the cache for Outlook and the reason Picture Viewer went to it is because I clicked on the attached files in the email. That's where they are stored. After going through what was with that email I could keep going with the next arrow and see hundreds of images in that folder from old emails since this machine was new. Picture viewer has no cache of it's own.
But the big question is why is it hidden? Like I said I can see folders in the Temporary Internet Files folder from the command prompt that don't show in Windows Explorer. And, once you know what one of those secret folders is named you can append it onto the path in Windows explorer and then you will see it and you can open it. If you check the properties of those secret folders they are not hidden so I can only assume that the operating system is hiding them and not allowing you to clear them.
The fact that they are Outlook image files is very suspicious.
Kristopher, maybe you are not seeing this because you are not using Outlook?
