We recently installed McAfee on all our computers. I have found it to be very effective on our older computers because it hogs so many resources that nothing else can get through. What I didn't realize was that the poor older PCs would have their hard drives running so much. It was like small pickup trucks pulling loaded trailers everywhere they went. Needless to say, two drives just wore out from all the added activity.

I never use McAfee or Norton. I've made a good amount of money cleaning these programs off peoples' computers because they hog so many resources. I always use AVG and I've never had an issue.

I'm another fan of AVG. And CCleaner. Both are free. Both work great. McAfee drove me nuts.

The McAfee and Norton versions for home users are terrible. They try to do way too much and usually end up causing more problems than they solve. On the other hand, they do have corporate versions that actually work quite well. I use McAfee Total Protection for my clients. They don't have to deal with any nag screens, and system resources are not drained. If there is a problem I get an email. Before this I would get calls from a client when Norton gave them a pop up to warn about a cookie, and the user would be freaked out over absolutely nothing. We use Symantec corporate edition at the college, and again, no problems. I haven't had to deal with a virus in years, and students are constantly plugging in their flash drives, or connecting their laptops to the network.
The other benefit to these versions is the license management. I don't have to purchase and activate multiple copies of software. Symantec has a management console running on a server, and McAfee TOPS includes centralized management through their servers. At home I use AVG and I have no complaints. Don't forget though, that the free version is only free for personal use.

I have used avg for some time and found it to be less of a hog but still a hog. I have switched all of our laptops to avast. Some pc's as well but not all just yet. The reason being is that I am watching performances between systems. Currently avast is allowing a much smother running machine.

We have AVG paid version but found it was to "heavy" and caused performance issues. We then moved onto Avast and we pretty happy with it but we have found that Avira Premium Suite is a better product and is quite "light". Avira We have also recently added The Cisco Spam Blocker for incredible email filtering. Awsome. Cisco Spam Blocker

Having failed again for anyone to enjoy my weak attempt at humor, I'll give up (for now).
Perhaps the Microsoft motto of "if you build it, I will fill it" applies here too. New programs work best on new PCs. Older machines, beware!
On my old boxes, I went back to good ol' AVG (& Avast) along with Ad-Aware and Spybot-Search & Destroy. McAfee was free from Comcast but unfortunately, I have only one PC that is up to the task. But on that one, it is wonderful! Previously, I had been running Norton's - but free was more in my price range.
