The shop maybe getting netbooks to replace the 7+ year old dell's that has been used for our regular service calls. They take so long to boot up, I could have done the service call and got back into my truck, before they are ready.

They have 500m ram, 30 gig hd and running xp sp 2. They were ok until last year, when they started showing their age and took forever to boot up. Can't put them into sleep mode. The batteries won't keep the computer up very long unplugged.

I have been using a netbook and the shop asked if I thought if they would be good for service.

Presently it is running vista basic on 2 gig of memory on a 250 hd.

Present netbooks run win 7 on 1 gig of memory with a 160 hd. Hard drive size isn't an issue. We use inter-tel session manager, vodavi ecom, inter-tel 3000, procomm and other programs to talk to systems.

What are your experiences with netbooks? Any recommendations of type. Or should we be looking at a low end notebook.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks,

Mikea

We looked at some netbooks, but opted for 14" Dell Latitudes instead. Built-in DVD-RW drive (so no need to carry or mess w/ external drives), larger screen for reading online manuals or programming screens, and the big thing was the ability to go up to 4 GB RAM. We are running Win 7 Pro 32-bit. Overall seemed a better fit for us than a netbook.

I have been using the Acer for a little over a year now.
I have a keyspan USB to serial converter.

I still keep my ole Latitude laptop for when I need to write to a PC card.

I have an Acer with a USB to serial converter. It's running XP home and has been trouble free for 2 years.

If you can afford it, I would recommend a "rugged" laptop such as the Panasonic Toughbook .

Quoted for truth!^^^ Also, the PDRC is really cool smile

The owners didn't want to spring for a new computer, when my old Toshiba died. So, I now have a Dell Latitude, circa 2005, BUT the best thing is an actual built in serial connection, so i don't have to mess with the USB converters. Other than that, I have it optimized to boot fast and only run process' related to our admin software. I manually update everything, when we have spare time in the office, but it's a $299 computer with a 2 year warranty... so I can't complain too much smile
