Question: Does anyone use a MP3 Player* in HOT environments?

Scenario: I like to listen to 'books on tape' at the gym, this includes the sauna (190 degrees for 20-30 minutes).

Yes I know heat is EXTREMELY bad for electronics! I cringe when I see the fools in there with their 4G phones...but I suppose if you have a great maintenance plan...

So, I purchased a 4 GB MP3 player for $19 and it lasted a couple years. I think it is developing battery issues (NOTE: the MP3 is charged through the USB port).

This products sounds okay...on those few times I surf the North Oregon Coast:

but at $150!?!?!? I think my $20.00 was a better buy.

Oh, yes I put a "*" at the beginning of the post:

*everything from .aa to .ZVR files I can deal with.

Since you are only in the sauna a short time, I think that device would work. I would actually find a small neoprene case to protect it from direct heat of the sauna. 20 mins should not affect the internal temperature of the unit, but there is really no way to tell unless you try it. I would even look at finding one of the older iPod nano or shuffles and see how that works.

I usually wrap the unit in my hand towel as a protection. I think the accumulation of temperature extreme 4-5 times a week for over a year might have had some effect on the longevity of the unit.

Of course I can skip the protection and hope it goes out within the warrenty period.

Thanks for the input.

$20 bucks and it lasted a few years sounds good to me. Try to replace it with a unit that uses AA or AAA batteries and you may get a few more years out of it since batteries are probably going to be the first thing to go in that environment.

I liked USB over having to replace every so often or having to recharge: NiMH, NiCd, et cetera.

I know I have recharged the ones I have plenty of times, but I am sure it hasn't been 1000 as advertised before they begin not to last as long. So there again it's time to either buy standard battteries, rechargable batteries, or somethin I can plug in and recharge.

Oh dear, what ever shall I do...
